Lamentation Bittersweet

When I died, I died alone.

No ears to hear my cry;

No love to say goodbye.

My dying breath, a silent wind,

Lost enroute to nowhere—

Lost in Dante’s fierce flame,

There I must patiently be taught

To renounce a phantom love,

To forget a great betrayal.

She, the master of illusion,

A silhouette in moonlight,

A sonata in a storm,

Sharpened her searing scorpion sting

On pieces of flattened ivory,

On strips of polished ebony.

A sorceress spinning her velvet voice—

She wove a web of pleasant promises;

She trimmed a trap with lurid lies.

She sang her Siren songs

In the playgrounds of the dolphin,

In the tree-lined path of panthers.

And All but one know not the promises

Made at saffron promenade,

Made with oaths of lasting love.

This betrothal cast so easily aside

By this skillful seamstress;

By this shrewd seller of purple.

She renounced the hoodoos of her birth,

Forsook the circle of her heritage,

Forsook her vows for cataracts and dynamos.

The sound of shattering pledges echo

O’er the unseen waters still,

O’er the mirrored sea of glass.

Her spell remains a constant curse—

The past a faithless fantasy,

The present a dismal daydream!

Hope in death and resurrection—

Freed beyond the empty grave;

Freed from Cupid’s charmed embrace

Led to rest beside still waters,

Where shepherds tend their flocks;

Where ewes give way to lambs.

When I wake in Haidee’s arms,

My failures all I will disown.

My epitaph to write upon my stone:

“When I died, I died alone.”
